10 Coolest Items To Wear To a Rock Gig (Journalism Portfolio)

You've bought tickets for a band you love a few months ago, you've been dying with excitement because the day/week/month has arrived. You're fully prepared, except the outfit is the only thing lacking. You want to look on trend, cool (literally), and not be weighed down by heavy clothes stopping you from head banging all night. Choosing what to wear to a gig is one of the big decisions
of the night. You need to look genre-appropriate, and the biggest problem of
them all: making sure you don’t melt into a giant pool of human sweat. Here is a list of items you could wear to a rock/indie/alternative gig.
1. Leather Jacket
The most important item of the night. Forget your phone, purse etc. The leather jacket is all you need. It can store all your personal items inside anyway, and it looks cool. It's always going to be a gig/festival favourite for a rock audience so you've not to worry of looking like you're stuck in the 90s. Unless that is the look you're going for, in which go for it, it's never going to leave any time soon.
2. Band t-shirt/jacket
The thing with band t-shirts is they are probably going to be the most generic worn item of clothing at the gig you're at. Whether that be Kasabian, The Stones or Foo Fighters - it's everyone's easiest way to look good on the night. This is not a bad thing though, it's appropriate, and it probably makes the band feel overwhelmed and appreciated.
3. Skirts
Skirts are an easy choice for gigs because they help with the heat and, even better they just go with anything. Any skirt can be ideal to a gig, unless you like the high waisted bodycon ones that hug you, that could be an issue but it is down to personal choice. Tennis skirts have been back in fashion for the last two years, and they are great because they are so inter-changeable and suit any mood. Wear this with a band t-shirt and leather jacket - amazing.
4. Jeans
Skinny - Jeans are not as great as a skirt in terms of coping with the heat at a gig, but they are the most casual and simplistic that add a certain chic to any outfit. Tight skinny jeans fit the genre and style for a rock gig or any gig in general. They are very inter-changeable. If at a rock or indie gig you want to stand out more aside from the other jeans wearers, try a pair of skinny Beetlejuice style jeans, they scream grunge and will extenuate your legs like never before because the vertical stripes act as an illusion. Or if the Beetlejuice is too out there for you, wear simple black or dark wash blue denim jeans. Mom - Mom jeans are another major jean trend to happen in the last year. Mom jeans are probably more bearable as they don't stick to you like skinnies, try a pair of high waisted 80s acid jeans with ankle chelsea boots.
5. Dresses
Dresses are seen a lot in the gig scene. Especially floral cut outs. They are the epitome of 90s grunge. Wear with literally ANYTHING.
6. Denim Jacket
The second most important after the leather jacket, similarly for the same reasons, except the denim just adds a cooler touch that can be styled with band patches and badges. And fyi, double denim is allowed.
7. Shoes
The high rise chelsea boot is the most common shoe with women who prefer to dress like they attend gigs everyday. It's got a touch of man, but still keeping the femininity. The chunky heels are great for keeping your balance too, so no embarrassing falling over the people around you. Likewise with creepers, they came back into fashion in 2012, and have seemed to disappear out of mainstream fashion again. Although, wear these to a gig and you'll get people talking.
8. Bags
Basically you want something that will keep your possessions in tact without having to carry a huge load on your arm/back. Try a mini satchel or backpack. Keep it simple in black and leather.
9. Tights
Yes. Tights. Tights are actually hugely important as the way you wear them says a lot about your style. The clean black tight just shows you want to keep your legs warm, Note that full of holes and rips is the way you'll probably end up like after the gig. Unless you want to wear distressed tights beforehand, go for it.
10. Hats
The traditional bowler hat or fedora is perfect for rounding up an outfit. If you're worried about it not staying on your head, getting lost or it being nicked, try a black or dark grey beanie.
