Girl Power & Feminism: Is It Just For Show?

12:36

Girl Power also known nowadays by girls and boys online as 'GRL PWR' has been prominent ever since The Spice Girls graced us back in the 90s. Girl Power is third-wave feminism in the feminism movement, and is known, obviously as a feminist term for girls and women in a bid for equality of the sexes. But is it now just known as a cool term?

Geri Halliwell stuck out the most (for me anyway) as the one in the Spice Girls to shout 'Girl Power' and rave about feminism. But I can't help but feel like the term is nothing more than a saying that makes you look edgy. Especially the now modern day vowel-less 'GRL PWR'.

I'm not saying that this term is used by any old people claiming to be feminists, because it is real, passionate feminists using the term. In all honesty, I do. Is it really focusing on women's rights and the gender pay gap, or is it just a cool term we get tattooed on our arm to prove ourselves? I'm not so sure.

When you type 'Feminism' and 'Girl Power/GRL PWR' into Tumblr or Pinterest, you are greeted to how I would describe 'edgy Tumblr-esque' style pictures that are literally made just for show, that feminism is now a 'trend' perhaps and not something that is a serious issue still in today's society. Yes, I think these images are different and make young girls want to be a feminist, but I think there is a little bit of these terms and pictures that take away the importance of feminism.

Do I think that feminism isn't taken as seriously when you see a picture of the words 'I'm a feminist' in Halloween styled font with a picture of somebodies nicely painted nails in shot? Absolutely. Although, to a certain extent I do understand that in order to get it into younger people's heads, the issue has to be raised in a certain way, as let's be honest, you are not taught feminism in schools.

I think let 'GRL PWR' live but let's stop making it a trend and make it worth while.
